Growing in the ’80s felt like living out a scene from a comic book or TV show. Suddenly, you had no adults watching over you. No parents? What a dream!
But for Generation X kids, this was reality. We said goodbye to our parents as we caught the school bus, knowing we’d have to handle our own meals, look after younger siblings, and generally take care of ourselves until they got back.
Generation X kids practically parented themselves back then. There was a unique joy in having complete freedom, with no cell phones to tether us, just the streetlights to signal it was time to head home.
